Explanation of the design of the Peace Mala

The original Peace Mala bracelet makes a double rainbow of the faiths. When creating this design I was aware that the rainbow is an important symbolic link between heaven and earth in many cultures. Interestingly, when the Peace Mala was launched in the Temple of Peace in Cardiff on Wednesday 27th November 2002, a double rainbow appeared in the sky after the ceremonies had finished. Those of us who were present felt it was an auspicious sign.

The Peace Mala comprises of fourteen coloured beads with a central white or frosted white bead strung between symbolic knots. The coloured beads represent the spiritual paths and their peace messages for the world. The central white bead represents the wearer. The final single bead is used as a toggle to bring the mala around the wearer's wrist. This represents unity, harmony and peace.

For those who prefer a less colourful Peace Mala, a mala of 14 black beads and a single white bead is available. In this arrangement the central white bead becomes symbolic of the rainbow and represents all the faiths. The message is the same.

All Peace Mala bracelets (with the exception of the Bespoke) are made from high quality glass beads and are strung on elasticated thread. Peace Malas are currently made to the highest quality by members of our volunteer team in Wales UK.

The elasticated thread used for our glass Peace Malas does not last for ever. Depending on normal wear and tear and the amount of time the bracelet is worn, the thread will eventually break, but hopefully the message and vision of Peace Mala, will stay with the wearer forever. Some glass bracelets last for about 4 months. Other wearers have reported their's lasting for over a year.

Each Peace Mala bracelet comes with a small explanatory colour booklet of the religions represented on the mala and their message of peace and tolerance. It is hoped that the wearer will be encouraged to find out more about the faiths represented on the bracelet.
